Kathleen Rose "Kathy" Modene, 67 of Glen Carbon passed away on Thursday, May, 18, 2017 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Richmond Heights, MO.
Kathy was born on January 1, 1950 in Highland, IL; the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Rose Theresa (Sasek) Modene. Kathy earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing from Southern Illinois University—Edwardsville. Initially she specialized in pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, St. Louis, MO. Subsequently, she became a member of the DePaul Hospital School of Nursing and later joined the faculty at Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing.
At Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, she provided leadership in converting the diploma program to a bachelors program which was known as Deaconess College of Nursing. Within the College, she held various faculty and academic leadership positions.
Her ability to present and write detailed self-study reports was acknowledged and she transitioned from faculty to working full time with accreditation. She was part of the team that led the transition of Deaconess College of Nursing to Chamberlain College of Nursing. She facilitated the growth of Chamberlain from the original St. Louis campus to more than 20 campuses located nationwide. She was also responsible for Chamberlain nursing programs gaining and maintaining national accreditation status. Her last position was Director, Institutional and Programmatic Accreditation.
She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honor Society and a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Kathy was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon and in her free time she relished the challenge of attaining the perfect bird photograph. She also passionately supported the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball franchise.
Kathy will be remembered for the many lives she touched through her love of nursing and all the special times she shared with her family, friends and colleagues.
She is survived by and will be missed by her sister; Mary Modene of Glen Carbon, IL; her brother, Lawrence "Larry" (Joan) Modene of St. Charles, MO; her aunts, Gloria Sasek of Baton Rouge, LA, Katherine Modene of Glen Carbon, IL; cousins, Katie Modene, Billy Modene, Jessica Modene and children Aubrey Rose Crocker, Maia Kathleen Crocker.
In addition to her parents, Kathy was preceded in death by her uncles; William Modene and Lawrence Sasek.
In celebration of Kathy's life, friends may call on Monday, May 22, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Nicholas Smith officiating at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 N. Main St. in Glen Carbon. Burial will follow at Buck Road Cemetery in Maryville. Memorials are suggested to Leukemia Lymphoma Society or Buck Road Cemetery. Condolences may be left online at irwinchapel.com.
